Red River, New Mexico - Five Things To Know Before You Go

It is that time of year when the holidays are upon us, with everyone showing themselves to be a little nicer and full of good cheer. However, for those of us who have chosen to leave town as quickly as possible with little regard for the holidays, it's the time of year when you find the perfect place to get away from it all. Hello, Red River, New Mexico!

Red River is one of those cities (it's a town really) that seems familiar to some who still use physical road maps. It gets people to wrinkle up their eyes a bit because they sort of know where you're talking about. In truth, it's one of those places that seems to be off most people's radar - and that is just fine.

More often than not, more popular resort areas tend to attract the rush of winter visitors. To the southwest of Red River is Taos, and to its southeast you'll find Angel Fire. These tend to draw most of the crowds, which tends to make Red River a real gem during the height of the snow season. It's tucked away in the southern Rocky Mountains, so it certainly has the right credentials to be on the top of great getaway lists.

If you're a bit on the fence as to whether Red River, New Mexico may be up your alley, why not check out these quick facts about this great little town:

Average Summer Temperature is 75°F
It certainly bears screaming from the rooftops, but having summer temperatures so ideal makes it easy to offer so many activities throughout the year (their Ski & Summer Area rocks!).

Average Annual Snowfall is about 200"
If you're a skier, snowboarder, or a snow-mobile junky, it's hard to scoff at a few hundred inches of average snow per year.

Varied Wildlife from Black Bears to Chipmunks
Friends of nature and the outdoors are often thrilled to know that such a varied amount of wildlife can be found in, and around, Red River.

Population Can Be Measured in the 100s
More popular ski areas & resorts can sometimes be bursting at the seams because of a large resident population & the incoming masses looking to vacation for the season. Red River has always been small & takes pride in maintaining a very old-school feel to the town.

Tourism is the Top Industry
Small population & traditions aside, a lot of resources are invested in maintaining an active visitors season throughout the entire calendar year. In other words, even if you can't make it during the winter, you're covered. There is a vibrant shopping & entertainment scene. Hungry? They also offer cafe & bistro-style environments, as well as steakhouses, pizzerias, and baked goods.
